The fact that you get a partial boot sometimes make me suspect a power problem. I have duplicated this a few times, it only takes a small power drop to make the hard drive fail. But it does not always cause damage to the drive. If you can boot externally it still may be a power problem. If you can boot then run a hard drive test.
