Check with ResEdit on the 8.6 update .smi (in OS OtherThanOSX) to see if it still has its resource fork. Anyone ever hear of OSX "forgetting" resource forks on files for older System and Mac OS? If instead of an .smi it was an uncompressed .img you could burn it right to CD-R with Nero on Windows or various Linux tools, some of which probably have OSX ports. That's what I do quite a bit, either make an uncompressed Disk Copy .img or use Basilisk II to make an .hfv on the PC then burn them with Nero as raw HFS images.
