Grinding is bad news, perhaps a new hard drive is in order.
Is it really worth the expense, You could always remove the hard drive and try using it as an external with another system. See if it will load as a secondary.. If it does indeed load you should be able to access and remove your files and or try to repair the drive, if nothing else at least format and install a new system. If nothing happens and the files are really not worth the time, trouble and expense, trash the drive and either get a replacement for the book or sell the book with out a drive or as parts.
If you really want a working 280c then pop over to eBay and take a look around there is currently a 280c with both full and mini docks 10T port and oh yes a floppy 5 days left and currently going for less that 20 bucks.

  Hi y'all,

I shut the machine down for the past few days.
In listening for the spinning noise -- there is a slight initial whirl, but it's very very brief -- thus, no, the disk is not spinning normally. The boing boing sound is still present -- but now, there's a new sound of a slight grinding noise.
  Any advice?

Maybe your disk's bearings froze - quite common with non-fdb disks
after long storage periods. Can you hear the disk spinning up when
    the machine turns on?
