I've run the preferences killer, seemed like a good idea; thanks Brian. The problem persists. Now I guess I'll try this suggestion. I was avoiding it because I used Apple's SW Update to get 10.2.5 and it was 85 MB or so; with DSL it only took 5 hours. Unless you know offhand where the updates get saved?
