okie, here's the story on trying to do the 10.2.8 update: 1. a beige G3 with a zif upgrade will not boot into single-user mode by holding down the CMD-S keys. It doesn't matter if I use the ADB keyboard that originally came with the system or not (I have an OrangeMicro USB/Firewire card in it, and the driver must not be immediately loaded...). 2. I ran disk utility and repaired the disk to the extent it would/can repair a boot disk, and there were a few permissions that got repaired. 3. I booted the system up with the Norton SystemWorks CD and ran Disk Doctor - several things were fixed there as well. 4. I finally managed to get the system to boot off the hard drive - for those who don't know, this is not easily done, since the last known boot drive is the CD-ROM in this case and the CD doesn't allow yoou to select any other boot disk... 5. I still can not do the update - the installer (either the full or the short update version) still dies. *&^%$#! weird. any other ideas???
