[G4] iTunes Library, Cross Platform

I did the testing for this last weekend since I use my WinAMD machine as a mule (it is always on) and I would like to keep my Apple boxes for the long run.

Steps:

Install iTunes for Windows on your Wintel machine.

Connect both machines to a router (preferable 100baseT for quick transfer)

Be sure that the Apple has Windows Sharing Turned On (and firewall open)

Connect to Thinkpad via the Connect To Server Option in Finder

Drag and drop your music onto the ThinkPad

On the windows box, after the transfer completes, drag and drop the iTunes Music folder (where the music is) into the Windows iTunes Library....

It will transfer everything into your windows iTunes Library, then go to "Sharing" in the iTunes Prefs, turn it on as desired....

On your Macs, you will see the name of the windows iTunes Library appear in the left hand nav bar under the local Library icon...select it, it will load...and you can play....



The only hitch is that your playlists all have to be on the windows machine - you can't put shared music in a local playlist (at least i couldn't last time I tried) and you can not cut a CD of "shared" music - the Windows machine can, but the client iTunes cannot)...

O Wise G Listers,

I realize this may be reaching a bit, but I recently made another venture to
the "Dark Side", and replaced my old IBM ThinkPad T20 with a new T41 ( I
have to use a Windows machine for work ). I added iTunes for Windows, and
would like to load my iTunes library from my G4 into the ThinkPad.

No copyright or piracy issues here, all music in the library is bought and
paid for or previously owned on CD. Any ideas?? I have a Pioneer 106D drive
in the G4 and a Combo drive in the ThinkPad, thought I might be able to burn
a copy and transfer. Before I waste the time and burn the DVD-RW, will it
work.
