[G4] Not Getting Backup Computer: Does this make sense?

IMO, it makes perfect sense. I never needed to use AppleCare (not to say 
that others haven't), and the chances that you will need it are between slim 
and none, once again IMO. If $$  is burning a hold in your pocket and you 
really want a new G5,  you could give your son the G4 733 - although having 
an easily accessible PC is nice for checking/debugging websites and other PC 
things.
