Obviously, the answer depends to a large extent on precisely which version of the OS you're using. It sounds a little like you're a Win user accustomed to this shortcut. As a general rule, when you move to another OS it's best to try to customize it as little as possible at first, to give yourself a chance to understand its paradigm -- the way it's designed to be used. Further, it's probably not a good idea to remap the Return key, because it may cause unexpected results elsewhere in Finder. > [...] Even if an <open> command cannot be mapped to the [return] key, > is it possible to map it to another; say, for example, as function > key? There is a venerable Mac shortcut, which dates back to at least System 7: cmd-down arrow. And there is logic to it: view a folder in Finder in list view, then try to navigate with the cmd-arrows shortcuts -- you'll get the point soon. Add the opt key, and you'll get even more interesting result -- such as opening a file/folder while closing the previous window (cmd-opt-down arrow). There is a list of keyboard shortcuts in Apple KB article ID 75459. Unfortunately, it's neither exhaustive, nor fully detailed. A better list is available at <http://davespicks.com/writing/programming/mackeys.html>, but I don't know if it is complete. <0x0192>
