Brian,

You may be correct!

I received a nice note from Seagate saying based on my description the new
drive could be defective.  I plan on taking the suspect SATA drive to a
friend on Monday that has a Firewire External Hard Drive Case that will
accept SATA drives. He has used SATA drives in the case so his SATA
interface is known to be good. Going to install the suspect SATA drive and
see what happens.
