Connected yes communicating.... maybe.

Did your friend setup a new user account on the eMac or install any  
software?


Check the  System preferences/network preferences/Modem (account name  
password and phone number will get you connected)

Make sure TCP/IP is set to PPP, also check proxies and verify the  
right modem is selected in the modem box.

Depending on the ISP provider they might need the DNS numbers entered  
in order to transfer data.

Also always a good idea to check with the ISP and make sure they are  
up and functional, they could have a connection problem on their end.
