[G4] USB 1 unresponsive after wake from Sleep

I have a power mac G4 Sawtooth 500mhz with os 10.4.1  installed. I  
have a problem with usb port 1 on the rear of the computer after  
waking from sleep. The port appears to be dead, but it is fixed after  
a restart. The computer has been up for about 3 days with off and on  
time in sleep mode. This problem occurs only when waking from sleep  
after the computer has been on for a period of time a few days, a  
week. Any ideas what might be causing this problem to occur? Again,  
it does not happen every time the computer wakes from sleep, but once  
the usb port does stop working the only way to fix it is to restart...
