Glen, I can help you with the keyboard typing unexpected characters. You keyboard is set to a different character mapping. To change this go to Apple Menu, System Preferences, and then click on International section. Then look at the input tab and check the box next to the language / keyboard layout you want. Usually it should be set to U.S. Keyboard Roman. Also while there check the language tab and make sure it is matching the language you want to use on the system. Daniel J.
