Bruce:

To use a SATA drive, you need a SATA card. The internal
hard drive controller on any G4 mother board is a PATA.

The cable for a PATA ("Parallel ATA" or "IDE") drive is a
roughly two inch wide flat cable. That for a SATA ("Serial
ATA") is roughly 3/4" wide, thicker, and hasa totally different
connector for both the digital drive and power supply connections.

I have an Acard SATA PCI card in my own G4 DA. It's significantly
faster than the internal controller, and will automatically see
drives as big as you can find. I believe that I paid about $80
for it from OWC. It does have a second connector for a second
HD, and came with adapters for the power supply connections.
Check out their web site.
