Here's a guess. Your download folder for Safari is set to the desktop (that's the default). You are downloading these items by clicking on something in a window. I would not expect that something get's downloaded without your doing something (if this were Windows, I'd expect it :-). You can check the Safari download window to see what files have been downloaded. You can click to see where they are.
