By professional standards, there is *no* microphone that will record conversations across a fairly large room. There is no such thing as a "zoom" microphone, and spending a lot of money on a big shotgun microphone is not a solution for poor mic placement. Bottom line: when audio is important, nobody uses a camera-mounted microphone. On camera mics are good for home movies... or maybe the reason home movies are so bad. Mics on Sony DV cameras are as good as any others. The problem is not mainly due to the quality of the mic, but poor positioning too far away from the sound source.
