Audio going mono and stereo...off and on via imovie 3

Hello,

I just noticed after I exported and did a test that when I have a video with
background music...everything works great. But when I have photos showing in
my project (.pict files) in imovie 3, the music goes low and in
mono....during the video segments, it goes back to normal (audio goes back
to stereo and sounds good).
