Recommendation Needed to replace Sony DVMC

I have a Sony Digital Video Media Converter and was going to buy a
new one and have found it on Sony's obsolete list.  Can anyone recommend a
similar device?  It is for a video newbie using iMovie and needs to get
video from a vcr to firewire and back to vcr.  I'm also hoping it won't be
over $600.
