Make sure the miniDV camera you get has analog inputs.  I think most do
now, but almost none did a couple of years ago.

Get a DV camera by all means. If all you are going to do is archive
tapes
almost any camera will do. If you are going to use the camera for
actual
shooting, the 3-chip models are superior, but of course, cost more.
