Unfortunately, Sony is the only company that supports D8, whereas MiniDV has a few different manufacturers. Sony has a good history of supporting "non-standard" formats, but even Beta died a slow agonizing death before finally being put out of its misery, whereas VHS decks are still being sold. The biggest issue in any of this hardware is how long the wind motors will last, and having to rely on a single vendor for product (who will likely pare down their line to a single model as they also standardize on MiniDV) makes the future of being able to play back tapes dicey. Even now, I try to only use my D8 camcorder under machine control when I am loading tapes in my editor and am very careful to always use a winder to rewind tapes.
