I called about FCP. The academic version is exactly the same, but as a student I get it cheap. No doubt a (successful) early adoption scheme. However for me, I would pay say $400 for the upgrade - like everyone else- or $400 for a full academic version of 4... so for me it's the same difference to buy a full new version.
