curious conversion problem

I have two QT movies that were made originally from an iMovie; I had to 
break them in half in order to use them in different places.
Anyway, now I'm trying to bring them both into iMovie to combine them 
again, but iMovie can't recognize them.
I tried exporting them to .avi and mpeg and still won't import.
What do I need to do?
