I think I can give you one big difference between the two - but it might not make much difference in your situation. I've been shopping for a good deal on a simple miniDV camcorder. But for my application, the camcorder MUST be able to record video coming in through the S-Video connector. I found a good price on a JVC GDR22, and the salesperson told me the S-Video worked both in and out. When I got it home, I found that this line of JVC cameras does not contain an analog to digital converter, and will not record video coming in through the S-Video connector. When I took it back, we found that the same is true of the GDR33. I think the Canon camcorder you mentioned WILL record through the S-Video connector - and even "pass through" to your hard drive. But I've been avoiding Canons, since so many people have reported problems with audio sync on the Canon cameras. Steve R.
