[MacDV] Image won't burn on toast

2 Ghz G5, Superdrive, iDVD 5.0.1. Created movie in iMovie with second 
short movie in Drive-in 2 theme. Direct burning results in about 50% bad 
discs (skips or just won't play). So...taking advice to burn to disc 
image and burn at 1X in Toast I tried it. Results: Toast says "...is in 
an unknown format and could not record the disc." Opened .img file and 
dragged results into Toast. Toast says "could not record the disc 
because there is a problem with the source material. Result code= -18774."

So dragged .img file into Disc Utility, burned at 2X and disc runs on 
everything in the house beautifully.

Are there some tricks to burning disc images or preparing the iDVD 
project before burning into an image?
