I appreciate your position, but I think you missed the point a bit. I don't disagree that PCI audio solutions afford much greater throughput, but I (and the original poster) are using laptops. And while I can't speak for the original poster, in my case, simplicity and portability are important factors. I'm not trying to do 24-track recording with a laptop. For projects involving 4 tracks or less, I have found USB and Firewire 400 interfaces to be adequate. Anything more than that, and I would certainly move up to a desktop solution as you suggested.
