Chuck, I hope that this is high on the list of things to fix. One of the nicest things about OS X is that I never quit out of anything and am instantly back in context a few seconds after lifting the lid. Dictate only takes a few seconds to start, but it is only app that will require this. I understand that it has a special relationship with hardware input that other software only apps don't require. Windows users are astounded that I never quit anything and never shutdown my laptop.
