[PB] Perplexing behaviour

Try running repair disk from your software install DVD. Applejack is  
a great utility to repair the disk +, Applejack is available at  
VersionTracker.com or MacUpdate.com

You might even try downloading the combination update for your system  
(10.4.8) and install that.
