I have the same problem when travelling and connecting to EarthLink.

One solution, with no extra software, was suggested a long time ago on this or another list. It was to create 2 different user accounts with different settings. I don't think this would work in many cases - maybe if you only have IMAP email accounts.

I now run Postfix Enabler to enable the Postfix email server in Jaguar/Panther. I then set the SMTP server[s] to "localhost", meaning my own PowerBook. This works for me. I don't know if it will work in your case but might be worth a try. It gets around some problems with using outside SMTP servers.
