Actually, some people have stated that the new Safari update did fix the squeaky sound. Sadly it didn't for me. I doubt that this is a hardware issue, as it only happens with Safari and Software Update. I suspect the Software Update application to use the same https:// download / connection framework as Safari. IE, Omniweb and Lynx[1] are fine.
