Actually, some people have stated that the new Safari update did fix the
squeaky sound. Sadly it didn't for me.

On my PB 667Mhz/1Gb ram/16MB video/Infrared, I noticed the same thing
but only when accessing https:// sites with Safari. I used the Safari
bug-button to respond, but no fix (yet?).

I doubt that this is a hardware issue, as it only happens with Safari
and Software Update. I suspect the Software Update application to use
the same https:// download / connection framework as Safari. IE,
Omniweb and Lynx[1] are fine.
[1] this is a text-only browser that works via the terminal, you don't
want to go there ;-)
