There are a number of tools in OSX that may help you troubleshoot. As I said, watching the Console app while you recreate the crash; also the app called Process Viewer will show you how much of the CPU and memory each process is taking up. This may reveal something; that reminds me... how much free hard disk space do you have on your OS drive/partition. If you do not have enough free space, the virtual memory could cause problems. Also, have you tried going back to your original settings after your hacks?
