I've had good luck with Carbon Copy Cloner backing up from my Ti to a 
firewire drive partition.  I use 'synchronize' which only moves over 
the the changes, so it generally runs pretty quickly, even though it's 
backing up about 30GB of data.  You'd just need a dedicated backup 
partition on the G5, that's all.
