They are broken links to software applications that don't exist any more after the installation of 10.3. Newer versions or completely new applications have taken the place of the old ones used in 10.2 or earlier. Click on them and just drag them off the dock, not to the trash. When you release the mouse button, they dissolve in a gratifying "poof" of graphic animation. Only Apple would include something that cool just to toast dock aliases. Then you will want to open the applications folder in 10.3 and drag any new apps to the dock as replacements. Remember, drag the application's icon to the dock not the entire application folder.
