Palm via serial-to-USB

I'm trying to connect a Palm m105 to the PowerBook G4 using a Palm 
serial cradle with a plain-vanilla USB-to-serial adaptor. As far as I 
can tell, the adaptor is working, but the Palm software isn't -- it 
behaves as if there were no connection. I installed the latest Palm 
Desktop software, I tried an older version, but it's no go under either 
OS X or OS 9. Any advice or suggestions?
