[X-Newbies] Reinstalling Java. How.

I'm having issues with Safari since I installed version 10.3.9. 
Closing a window (frequently), brings up the whirly-wig and then a 
message telling me Safari quit.  Quitting Safari brings up the same 
message.

I've downloaded Java 1.4.2, but when I try to install it the 
installer tells me it is not needed, what do I have to remove to 
re-install Java.
