Twenty years ago that was true, but not today. Again, visit some stores with your wife and listen as she plays. Your "problem" is that you will be able to save money if you can get a nice weighted-key keyboard without the built-in amplifier and speakers, and maybe without the synthesizer. I do not know if such a thing is available, but if you want to save money this is what you should look for.
