[X4U] lacie ethernet harddrives

for back-up purposes i would like to get an external lacie fw400/ 
fw800/usb2 drive (around 250gb). looking around, i noticed that these  
cost about the same as the ethernet/usb2 ones (around 330.- swiss  
francs)

the drive would be plugged in to a hub connected to my airport  
express, thus potentially accessible to everybody.

my questions:
what are users' experience with these types of drives? good? bad?
how can i prevent unwanted intrusions, etc?
