[X4U] Cryptic opening screen

Hi all, I was called to help with a new iMac on Tiger which started  
malfunctioning after loading Microsoft Office. The game Civilization  
which worked before stopped loading. Tried Repairing permissions,  
reloading MS, rebooting. Then tried to reload Tiger. The big X splash  
screen image was only half. On clicking Restart from the screen, the  
next screen contained coa small top right corner of text in geekspeak!

Any ideas?

On rebooting and ejecting the Tiger OSX disc, the computer resumed  
its normal look but still wouldn't launch Civilization  
(Library...error).

Any ideas?
