[X4U] Off Topic? Monitor Resolution Quandary

I just purchased a Dell 2005FPW flat panel display and tried to connect it
to an older 450 Mhz DP Mac G4 with an ATI RAGE 128 Pro graphics card in it.

When I connect it using the ADC connector on the card with a DVI to ADC
adaptor cable, I can only get 1280 x 1024 resolution on it. If I connect the
monitor using the supplied VGA cable to the VGA port on the card, I can get
1680 x 1050 resolution.

I am confused by this as I would expect both interfaces to handle the same
resolutions.

Any ideas on how to get the digital interface resolution up to 1680 x 1050?
Is it possible with this Mac and video card?
