A simpler way to find the location of files downloaded with Safari is
to use the little magnifying glass icon in Safari's Downloads window.
This simple expedient taught me the location for Dashboard widgets
with the first one I added.
Mind you, the reason I resorted to this expedient was because my
downloaded widget had not shown up on the Dashboard shelf. To my mind
this is of more concern than the cases where widgets are not
automatically installed. I've seen others speak of re-launching the
Dock to refresh the shelf, but I've found that the best approach (for
now, at least) if a new widget does not appear on the shelf in the
expected alphabetical segment is to scroll out of and back into that
segment.
