You can also format the drive yourself in the Disk Utility app as "MS-DOS 
File System".

No snake-pit, just lively discussion.

Just make sure that the hard drive you give them has no files on it, and 
then if they are using PC's, they can format it to FAT32 and you will be 
able to mount it and read from it fine.

Just to be safe, ask them the same question.
