[X4U] 10.4.1 on various machines

A quick question relating to a problem already solved. Last weekend I  
dl'd 10.4.1 to my PB 17 G4 1 Gig. I then installed it onto my wife  
17" iMac 1.6 G5. It would not install onto my secretaries 1.25 emac,  
so I dl'd a version directly onto her machine. Mail worked fine on my  
machine and my secretaries, but not on my wife's iMac. To cut a long  
story short I dl'd another version of 10.4.1 from the Apple site, not  
Software update, directly onto her machine, and mail now works  
properly. On the Apple site it said one should dl from there if you  
want to install the update on multiple machines. My question, do the  
updates differ for various machines if using Software update and is  
it always advisable to dl directly to each machine, or did Mail  
somehow become corrupt in transferring 10.4.1 from the PB G4 to the  
imac G5?
