I imagine many manufacturers cringe whenever their products get tested. Out of an extensive product line, CR may pluck a mid-level product that will suffer when compared to competitors' high-level products. A long time ago, I remember a Sears paint buyer explaining why his paint fared so poorly in a comparison -- his paint, specially formulated for use in the snow belt, failed because it was tested for conditions in the deep South. Still, when CR exposes products that fail to live up to advertised claims, like Sharper Image's air cleaner/ionizer, they are doing a service.
