You might want to look into Junk Matcher available for free at Source  
Forge. It's an add on to mail.app in the rules area.

I've been very pleased at how well it removes/segregates junk and  
spam. I have no experience with .mac and I don't know enough to  
comment on why you've been unable to filter stuff from your cable  
connection, but this might help as it looks at all your incoming mail  
and applies some pretty sophisiticated rules.
