You do not have to authorize your iPod, it can play any tracks from the iTMS. Also, the tracks in your computer's backup will also play on your computer once you've authorized that computer to your account. On paper, with good backups, nothing is ever "lost". (There are, of course, lots of places where this theory falls apart, but if you perform good, regular backups, in theory you should never lose even one byte of data.)
