pardon me..external drives is what I've been talking about  
here..sorry, I wasn't specific. I have now had 8 external drives, ALL  
without fans, all seemingly doomed to cook themselves to death  
prematurely.

I always provide adequate space around the drives for airflow, and  
always set them up according to manufacturer's suggestions.
