Maybe it doesn't work, because the Mac under standard conditions  
takes this info not from etc/hosts but from an entry in the Netinfo DB.

Just a wild guess along the lines of user data hosted in Netinfo vs.  
classic Unix files.

Google for "Freedb itunes" gives some workarounds via 3rd party  
Applescripts and applications.
