I believe it is standard practice to unmount any removeable media before disconnecting it. Here's an article from Apple with 6 steps about "how to use firewire target disk mode": <http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58583> In other articles this is repeated, as is the instruction to save and close any work that is open on the mounted drive before ejecting it. I've usually seen this explained as avoiding the possibility of data corruption if you disconnect the external drive while processes are running.
