Roy,

It sounds as though you have a font issue. You're probably writing/pasting
in English, but in a font that looks like another language. Often this can
be cleared up by restarting your computer. If that doesn't do it, look for
Helvetica Fractions or Times IPA (or similar fraction/phonetic fonts) and
disable them. You may need to at least Log Out to see if this fixes your
issue.

Some people will advise that clearing your font cache can help; I've never
had to do that to fix this (it usually shows up for me after I've activated
certain client fonts that must somehow override the system fonts that
Safari, Mail, etc. want to use).
