You can use a text editor (such as BBEdit) to chip text out of the corrupt
database. It's not pretty, attachments are lost, text is only somewhat
recognizable amidst gibberish characters, etc. But if there's some bit of
text you HAVE to have out of a very important email, it's doable, better
than not having it at all... but only barely.

Before you go that route, you might try zipping the database and then
accessing the new copy after unzipping it again -- or simply duplicating the
database on your hard disk, accessing the duplicate instead. You might try a
Safe Boot, and then trying to access the database. You might also try
running a third-party disk utility (such as DiskWarrior).

You might also try a new User on your wife's Mac, to make sure there's not
some other corruption in the User that's causing the failures in your wife's
main User.
