[X4U] Ugly icons and worse

I find that some point some of my files - mostly Freehand and  
Photoshop - became unopenable and their icons have turned into those  
rectangular gray one with 'exce' in green on them. Photoshop says it  
cannot recognise the files and GraphicConverter does not want to have  
anything to do with them.

Help.

Is there any hope and what causes this horror - that is what can I do  
to avoid this happening in the future.
