That should have read:

While in the Finder, select "New Finder Window" from the File drop down menu.

Another step that should have been included in 
that the user should adjust the window size to a 
different setting than that in which it opened. 
Any size. Any placement. The mere movement and 
sizing of the window will cause all of the 
changes that are made to that window to be the 
preferred default the next time a new Finder 
window is opened. Changing the View of that 
window will also be saved (Icon, List, Column.)
